Museum Night 2026 in Riga and Latvia - program, events, map

Museum Night 2026 in Riga and throughout Latvia will be an evening when the city streets become a living cultural route, while museums, castles, churches, libraries, archives, galleries and historic buildings open their doors for a special night program. This is one of those events best experienced not in a rush, but with a carefully planned route, because in one evening it is possible to enter places that are not freely accessible in everyday life. The theme of Museum Night 2026 lets us look at objects as living storytellers, because behind every exhibit are people, events, secrets, journeys and the imprints of an era. In Riga, a particularly strong program will be offered by Riga Castle, the Latvian War Museum, the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, the Corner House, the Žanis Lipke Memorial, the National Library of Latvia, the Riga Art Nouveau Centre and many other cultural venues. This evening will be suitable for families with children, history enthusiasts, art lovers and those who simply want a beautiful and meaningful evening in the city. Visitors will be able to take part in tours, concerts, creative workshops, educational games, object stories, film screenings and special night walks.

In some places, events will begin already during the day, while elsewhere the program will continue until midnight or even until one in the morning. It is therefore worth deciding in good time whether this year to follow the Old Riga museum route, the cultural venues of Pārdaugava, the Jūrmala program or one of the special Museum Night events in Latvia’s regions. In Old Riga, within a short distance, it is possible to combine Riga Castle, the Saeima, the Latvian War Museum, the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, the Pharmacy Museum, Mentzendorff’s House and the Barricades Museum. In Pārdaugava, you can create a calmer but very beautiful evening route with the National Library of Latvia and the Žanis Lipke Memorial. In Jūrmala, Museum Night will take on a special resort-city atmosphere with museums, art, outdoor activities, fish smoking and a concert. Families will especially enjoy places where the program is not only about looking, but also about doing, searching, guessing, making and listening. For history enthusiasts, this evening will be an excellent opportunity to combine stops related to statehood, war, occupation, the Awakening and city history in one route.

Art lovers should plan a visit to places where exhibitions, workshops and author-led tours will be on view. For those interested in architecture, the opportunity to view historic buildings, their interiors and the stories hidden behind their facades will be especially valuable. Queues may form at some of the most popular places, so it is better to start the evening earlier and visit the most important stops at the very beginning. At places with security checks, you should arrive in good time and bring an identity document if required. Prior registration may be needed for some tours, so it is advisable to check the route before setting off.

Museum Night 2026 will be not only a free museum visit, but also an opportunity to see Latvia through objects, spaces, memories and the people who preserve these stories. If you want to feel the city’s history, art, music, mystery and special night atmosphere in one evening, this program should definitely be included in your May plans.

Recommended events in Riga

Riga Castle will be one of the main venues of Museum Night 2026, because here in one evening it is possible to combine the experience of Latvian history, statehood and castle architecture. The National History Museum of Latvia at Riga Castle will offer a program about objects, festive traditions and items found during restoration that reveal the life of the castle anew. A special atmosphere will be created by the concert “Sound Waves Through Time”, where early and contemporary music will help visitors feel history not only with their eyes, but also through sound. Alongside this, the residence of the President of Latvia in Riga Castle will be open to visitors from 15.00 to 24.00, allowing a glimpse into the ceremonial and working rooms where decisions of national importance are made in everyday life. This will be one of the most valuable choices for those who want to see Riga Castle not only as a beautiful building, but as a living symbol of the Latvian state.

The Latvian War Museum will be one of the strongest stops for those interested in military history, technology and modern security. The museum will be open from 19.00 to 01.00, so it can also be included in a later evening route. Visitors will be able to view an exhibition about the development of drones and their role on the modern battlefield, a Naval Forces photo exhibition and an exposition about the National Armed Forces. Especially interesting will be the opportunity to meet representatives of the NAF Recruitment and Selection Centre, which will give the evening not only historical but also very current significance. This place will suit both adults and young people who want to better understand how defence, technology and national security are changing.

The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia will be an emotionally meaningful and very important Museum Night stop. From 19.00 to 24.00, visitors will be able to learn about the history of Latvia’s occupation from 1939 to 1991, view the exhibition “To Believe and to Serve” and take part in the evening program. From 19.30 to 20.15, the museum atmosphere will be complemented by a concert by students of the J. Mediņš Riga Music School, while from 21.00 to 22.00 there will be a history lesson for adults in English. This place is especially suitable for those who want to use Museum Night not only for entertainment, but also for a serious conversation with Latvia’s history. The visit can be deep, quiet and memorable, because the museum’s story touches on the most significant 20th-century events in Latvian society.

The Corner House will be one of the most powerful and also most sought-after Museum Night venues. From 18.00 to 24.00, the exhibition “History of the Cheka in Latvia” will be on view, helping visitors understand how the Soviet repressive system operated in Latvia. Free tours of the authentic KGB premises will take place once an hour, but prior registration and an invitation are required. This is not an easy stop, but that is precisely why it is so meaningful. If you want to experience a place with a very strong historical imprint during Museum Night, the Corner House should definitely be included in your route.

The Žanis Lipke Memorial in Ķīpsala will offer one of the most beautiful and artistically distinctive programs. From 17.00 to 20.00, Armenian “bird letter” and pomegranate screen-printing workshops will take place for children and adults. From 19.00 to 20.30, visitors will be able to go for a walk through Ķīpsala together with Lolita Tomsone and architect Zaiga Gaile. From 21.00 to 22.00, artist Karinē Paronjanca will lead a tour of the exhibition “The Light of the Pomegranate”, while from 22.00 to 23.30 there will be a screening of Sergei Parajanov’s film “The Color of Pomegranates”. This program will especially appeal to those who want to combine history, art, architecture, cinema and the evening atmosphere of Ķīpsala.

The Riga Art Nouveau Centre will be an excellent choice for lovers of architecture, interiors and Riga’s beauty. From 19.00 to 01.00, visitors will be able to view the museum exhibition and discover the stories of Art Nouveau objects. The area around Alberta iela is in itself one of the most beautiful places in Riga, so this museum is worth combining with an evening walk through the Art Nouveau quarter. This will be a calmer, aesthetic and highly photogenic stop for those who want to see Riga from its most elegant side during Museum Night.

The National Library of Latvia will be a good choice for those who want a broader cultural evening outside the classic museum format. The program “Restarting Reading!” fits well with the atmosphere of Museum Night, because on this evening the library becomes a place to encounter books, ideas, architecture and people. This visit can be conveniently combined with the Pārdaugava route and the Žanis Lipke Memorial. The library building itself is an impressive evening stop, especially for those who want to look at central Riga from the left bank of the Daugava in a different light.

Jūrmala Open-Air Museum will be one of the best choices for families and those who want to spend Museum Night in a more active, freer and seaside atmosphere. From 19.00 to 22.00, visitors will be able to take part in activities about fish processing, weights, measures and Latvian fish. From 20.00 to 21.30, there will be a fish-smoking masterclass and tasting, giving the evening a very practical and tasty experience. From 22.00 to 23.00, the band “LĀDEZERS” will perform, so Jūrmala Open-Air Museum can become an excellent place to end the evening. This program is especially suitable for those who want to spend Museum Night not only indoors, but also with an open-air feeling, the closeness of the sea and live music.

Practical Tips for Visitors

When planning a Museum Night route, first choose one part of the city or one region, rather than trying to cover too many places in one evening. In Riga, the most convenient starting point will be Old Riga, because Riga Castle, the Saeima, the Latvian War Museum, the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, the Barricades Museum, the Pharmacy Museum, the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, and the Mentzendorff House are located within a short distance. If you want a quieter evening, choose churches, memorial museums, the Great Cemetery, or the Jūrmala direction. If you are going with children, it is better to choose programs with workshops, games, experiments, and outdoor activities. If you are interested in history, the most important stops will be Riga Castle, the Saeima, the Latvian War Museum, the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, the Corner House, and the Barricades Museum. If you are interested in art and design, choose the Riga Art Nouveau Centre, the Museum of the Artists’ Union of Latvia, the Romans Suta and Aleksandra Beļcova Museum, Jūrmala Museum, and galleries. Arrive in good time at venues with security checks. Be sure to take a document with you if you plan to visit the Saeima. Register in advance for tours with a limited number of places.
