Flat White vs Cappuccino vs Latte

Piedalies.lv - Flat White vs Cappuccino vs Latte

When wandering into a coffee shop, the array of coffee options can be overwhelming, especially when looking at drinks that seem very similar, such as the flat white, cappuccino, and latte. These three coffee drinks are staples in cafes around the world and are beloved by many. While they share some similarities, such as being made from espresso and milk, there are distinct differences in their preparation, taste, and presentation.

Flat White

Originating in Australia or New Zealand (the exact origin is a subject of debate), the flat white has gained popularity globally for its strong coffee flavor balanced with velvety milk. A flat white is typically served in a smaller cup than a latte, with a double shot of espresso and a layer of steamed milk. The key feature of a flat white is the microfoam—a velvety, creamy milk that is not too frothy or airy. This results in a strong coffee taste with a rich, smooth texture.

Cappuccino

The cappuccino has a storied history with roots in Italy, where it's a morning staple. Traditionally served in a 6-ounce cup, the cappuccino consists of equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. This creates a luxuriously layered drink that balances the boldness of espresso with the creaminess of milk and a frothy top. The presence of more foam makes the cappuccino lighter in texture compared to the flat white and latte. Cappuccinos are often sprinkled with chocolate powder on top, adding a touch of sweetness.

Latte

A latte, or caffè latte, is perhaps the milkiest of the three drinks. Originating from Italy, "latte" literally means "milk" in Italian, which is fitting given the drink's composition. A latte is made with one shot of espresso and three times as much steamed milk, topped with a small amount of milk foam. Served in a larger cup, usually 8 ounces or more, the latte offers a creamy texture with a milder coffee flavor compared to the flat white and cappuccino. This makes it a popular choice for those who enjoy a less intense coffee taste.

Differences in Texture and Flavor

The main differences among these drinks lie in their texture and flavor:

  • Flat whites offer a strong coffee flavor with a smooth, velvety texture.
  • Cappuccinos are characterized by their airy, frothy texture and balanced flavors.
  • Lattes provide a creamy experience with a milder coffee taste.

Which One to Choose?

The choice between a flat white, cappuccino, and latte often comes down to personal preference. If you prefer a strong coffee flavor with less milk, the flat white is for you. For those who enjoy a frothy, airy texture and a balanced taste, a cappuccino is the way to go. And if you lean towards a creamier drink with a milder coffee taste, you might find the latte to be your favorite.
