Ubuntu 24.04, also known as Jammy Jellyfish, is a popular version of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to install Ubuntu 24.04 on your computer, whether you're setting up a dual-boot system with Windows or replacing your current operating system entirely.

Preparation

Before proceeding with the installation, ensure you meet the following prerequisites:

  • Backup Your Data: Always back up important data before installing a new operating system.
  • Download Ubuntu 24.04 ISO: Visit the official Ubuntu website to download the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ISO file.
  • Create a Bootable USB Drive: Use a tool like Rufus (for Windows) or UNetbootin (for Mac and Linux) to create a bootable USB drive with the Ubuntu ISO.
  • Ensure Internet Connectivity: Although not mandatory for installation, an internet connection is recommended for updates and third-party software.
  • Check System Requirements: Make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for Ubuntu 24.04:
    • 2 GHz dual-core processor or better
    • 4 GB RAM or more
    • 25 GB of free hard drive space
    • Either a DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media
    • Internet access is helpful

Ubuntu 24.04 Installation Steps

1. Boot from USB

  • Insert the bootable USB drive into your computer.
  • Restart the computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings. This is usually achieved by pressing a specific key such as F2, F12, Delete, or Esc immediately after turning on the computer.
  • Set the USB drive as the primary boot device and exit the BIOS/UEFI, saving the changes.

2. Start Ubuntu Installation

  • After booting from the USB, you'll see the Ubuntu welcome screen. Choose "Try Ubuntu" to test Ubuntu without installing, or "Install Ubuntu" to proceed with the installation.
  • Select your preferred language and click "Continue."

3. Installation Type

  • If you have another operating system installed, you'll be given options to either install Ubuntu alongside it, erase the disk and install Ubuntu, or something else for manual partitioning. For a fresh install, select "Erase disk and install Ubuntu." For dual-booting, select "Install Ubuntu alongside them."
  • Warning: Choosing "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" will delete all data on the disk. Ensure you have backups if necessary.

4. Select Your Location

  • Choose your location from the map or type it into the search box. This setting helps determine your time zone and local settings. Click "Continue."

5. Keyboard Layout

  • Select your keyboard layout and click "Continue."

6. Who Are You?

  • Fill in your name, your computer's name, a username, and a password. You can also choose to log in automatically or require a password to log in. Click "Continue."

7. Installation Progress

  • The installer will now copy Ubuntu 24.04 files to your computer and install the selected components. This process can take some time, depending on your computer's specifications and your internet speed for downloading updates.

8. Restart the Computer

  • Once the installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart the computer. Remove the USB drive when instructed, then press "Enter."

9. Login

  • After rebooting, you'll be presented with the login screen. Enter your password to log in to your new Ubuntu 24.04 installation.
