Critical Thinking: Not Everything That Sounds Convincing Is True – Online, September 9, 2026

NVO House opens its autumn seminar season with an online session on critical thinking. The seminar is intended for representatives of associations and foundations of non-governmental organizations in Riga. It will be led by investigative journalist and co-founder of the Baltic Centre for Investigative Journalism Re:Baltica, Inga Spriņģe. The lecturer has more than 20 years of professional experience. Over the past ten years, she has worked extensively on disinformation, misinformation and propaganda issues in Latvia and internationally. The session will focus on evaluating information in the digital environment. Participants will learn about signs that help identify misleading content on social media and in the news. The seminar will explain how social media use emotions and why such techniques work. The most common disinformation and fraud techniques will be examined. Participants will be able to learn practical information verification tools. The event will be useful for organization representatives who want to respond more confidently to the spread of false information.

What to Expect at the Event

The seminar will cover how to recognize “red flags” on social media and in the news, understand emotional manipulation techniques, and learn about information verification methods. It will also discuss what to do when disinformation is identified and how to respond when false information is spread about an organization or its employees.
