The Lonesome West – Valmiera Theatre Round Hall, November 10, 2026
Valmiera Theatre presents Martin McDonagh’s two-part tragicomedy “The Lonesome West”. The production is directed by Toms Treinis. The action takes place in a remote Irish village, where two brothers constantly argue, hate each other and fight even over seemingly insignificant matters. The original reason for their quarrel has long been forgotten, yet their daily lives continue in a rhythm of hatred and conflict. Written in 1997, “The Lonesome West” is the concluding work in Martin McDonagh’s Leenane Trilogy. The production explores family relationships, mutual intolerance and the destructive power of hatred. The dark atmosphere characteristic of McDonagh’s drama is combined with wit and black humour. The set design is by Hugo Bērziņš, the costumes were created by Marta Treine, and the music was composed by Jūlijs Melngailis. The lighting designer is Niks Cipruss, while the play was translated by Normunds Naumanis. The cast includes Tomass Ralfs Ābolkalns, Anna Nele Āboliņa, Ģirts Rāviņš and Sandis Runge. The performance may appeal to viewers who appreciate intense, harsh and paradoxically humorous theatre.
What to Expect at the Event
“The Lonesome West” is a two-part tragicomedy about the destructive relationship between two brothers. Director Toms Treinis also sees parallels in McDonagh’s story with the way people in Latvia sometimes treat one another. The play’s dramatic tension escalates the conflict to the extreme while offering unexpected and absurdly witty twists.
