Reiha Phase: Chamber Music Event at Hanzas Perons – Riga, October 3, 2026

On October 3, 2026, the chamber music event “Reiha Phase” will take place at Hanzas Perons in Riga. The evening is dedicated to the milestone birthday of American composer Steve Reich. The event is intended as an opportunity to discover chamber music works from various periods of the composer’s creative career. The concert space will be designed by artist Miķelis Mūrnieks. Violinist Marta Spārniņa will perform Steve Reich’s work “Violin Phase”. This 1967 opus was written for solo violin and tape. The Perona Quartet will give the Latvian premiere of the string quartet “WTC 9/11”. The work was composed in 2010 and is dedicated to the memory of those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Musicians from “Sinfonietta Rīga” and “Perons Percussion” will perform under the direction of conductor Normunds Šnē. Pianists Rihards Plešanovs and Evelīna Jēkabsone, as well as a vocal quartet led by Viktorija Majore, will also take part in the programme. They will perform the monumental work “Tehillim”, composed in 1981.

What to Expect at the Event

“Reiha Phase” will bring together a solo violin work, the Latvian premiere of a string quartet, and a performance for a larger ensemble in one evening. The works included in the programme will reveal the diversity of Steve Reich’s oeuvre, beginning with his early “phasing period” and continuing with compositions created later. The event will feature music for a variety of performing ensembles.
